"River Song"

I started out painting this "en plein air" on a bridge over the Middle Saluda River at Jones Gap State Park in June of this year. It's much larger than I have ever attempted outdoors and was quite a challenge. I made three trips to the park (about an hour from my house) to paint it at the same time of day and same lighting conditions. I also worked on it in the studio to finish it. I hope to paint this large again, but I better get faster at it or make sure to paint a subject closer to home. This will be hanging at the West Greenville Art Festival in the Pendleton Street Arts District the weekend of September 18 and 19. Stop by and say hi and see this piece in person.

Fishing on the Toe River

In May, I competed in a Plein Air Paint-Out in beautiful Burnsville, NC. This is one of the two paintings I entered. It was a cloudy day as I painted alongside the Toe River. It was so enjoyable. The competition was excellent. I was so impressed with the entries. I did not win anything that night, but had a great time meeting artists from the Ashville/Burnsville area. The judge did an excellent job (I agreed with her choices). I look forward to going back next year. This photo seems a little blurry, I 'm going to have to try to get a clearer one.

Jones Gap again

Here's a painting I did with the pallette knife on the second day at Jones Gap State Park. I really was disappointed in it while there, but now, after taking another look at it, I like it. I feel it captured the chaotic movement of the water swirling and the dappled sunlight that was constantly changing and getting me so confused.

Yesterday, I took my Dave and 2 of my grandsons, Skylar (7) and Breckon (5) to Jones Gap so they could experience the beauty of the river and deep shade of the forest on such a hot and humid afternoon. It was great, we had so much fun hiking along the river, crawling around the rocks and watching the boys wading, throwing rocks and all that comes with little boys discovering nature. The air around the water was cool and as long as we were in the shade, the heat of the day was quite tolerable.

View from Mt. Vernon Gardens, Omaha, Ne

This is a small plein air oil painting that I did last summer, but thought i should post it so i would have something to post, since I am still in Henderson, NV waiting for the birth of my grandaughter, and haven't painted at all in the past 2 weeks. It looked as if she was going to be born a few weeks early, so I rushed out here to babysit my two little ones when my daughter Jaimi went to the hospital, but so far, the little stinker is staying put. Jaimi will be induced tomorrow nite, and the baby will most likely come sometime in the early hours on her actual due date, May 31. I'm praying she'll come today sometime.

Eagles over the Platte, Schram Park, Gretna, Ne

This is a small oil painting, 8"x6". It's a study for the large painting I did for my husband earlier this month, only instead of the deer, I have eagles flying overhead. There's a cute story I have of my sister when she was college age. As I remember it, I think she was at Schram Park, called Gretna Fish Hatchery at the time, and was watching an eagle there. To her delight, he flew right over her blue pinto and pooped on it. The whole car was covered in white splats over the top. She was so proud of it, she didn't wash her car for a long time.

Fiasco

Wow, I hate to say it, but my painting, that had such great beginnings turned out to be a fiasco!!
You won't believe how many hours i have spent on that painting, and before i went to bed last night, i scraped it all down. I couldn't stand it. So many hours, I'm amazed actually, at the amount of time i've had to paint and the stamina i've had to stand before the easel, which is a good thing, but oh, how much paint i have used and how many things i have tried to remedy the painting. It's kind of sad that it had to be my first painting of my new career to be such a fiasco, but, I can say that i have learned from it and hopefully will benefit in the future from those things i have learned. Yes, and how embarrasing that it would have to be my first painting for my blog that is turning out like this. And sad that it is my husband's Christmas/retirement present. (Oh well, he's getting that TV also :) One thing i have definately learned-I will not make a large painting again (this one was huge for me-24x30) without doing a smaller version to work out the colors, etc. Live and learn. If i can get a decent photo of the scraped canvas i will post it. It's kind of interesting and i might be able to make a buck emerge from the scraped down landscape. That might be fun.
