Patio at Mary's, Greenville, SC

Way too hot to paint outdoors. I know, I'm a wimp, and am choosing to stay inside my air conditioned studio to paint from photos. Not as much fun, but comfy.

This painting gave me so much trouble. I spent 2 1/2 days struggling and fighting with it. I'm so glad to be done. I blame it on the lighting in my studio, and the light in my house, for the most part is just too dark. It looks fine while on my easel with the easel light on but as soon as i turn off the light , the colors look so dull and dark. So, today, I went over it with my easel light off, going only by the light from my window. It looks so much better now.

I've been wanting to paint this scene for a long time now, and have gotten out of my system. It looks nice in a gold frame.

I'm getting ready for the West End Art festival in Greenville, in mid September. Come and see me there if you live in this area.

I just finished this one from photos taken one morning on my walk. I couldn't believe what a hard time I had with it. I was going to do a larger one with sunflowers, but I don't think so now.

Veggie Still LIfe

This is one of four paintings I did earlier in July to hang in a health food grocery store cafe. Their theme that month was tomatoes and I wanted to have some paintings hanging somewhere in this town, so I worked really hard and painted 4 in one week. I set the veggies up in my "studio" and painted from life. That is the only way i like to paint, really. Painting from a photo is so hard for me for some reason.
I love veggies, so I really enjoyed painting these. They are back home now, and are available if interested in having this little gem hanging in your kitchen.

Completed Painting-"The Arbor"

I finished this last night. The final phase was adding details, fixing a few things that were bothering me, mainly the color of the shadows-I grayed them down a bit.
I'm sending a photo of this off to a competition for the Masters Garden Society here in the Upstate. We'll see what happens.
18x24x1.5 oil on stretched canvas.

Phase #4 Painting Demo

I have been finalizing the main shapes and colors and refining some shapes, such as the shadows. Unfortunately, I liked the shadows better before they were refined. Hmmm. So far, I have been able to keep the general feel of the design together, and I'm happy about that.
