Queen Anne's Lace, Simpsonville,SC

I'm home and I'm painting! I had a wonderful time in Henderson, NV, staying with my daughter and son-in-law and their little ones, until the new baby was born. She came on Sunday morning at 5:36am, weighed 6:12 and 19 inches long. Her name is India-Jade Ryan Schmidt and she is beautiful.
I spent the day yesterday working in the yard, planting flowers, fertilizing etc, and then went swimming with my grandson's, Skylar,7 and Brecken who is 5. What a beautiful summer day and perfect for swimming.
My plan today was to paint outdoors, my favorite. But I must admit, I'm a wimp and it's been raining all day. I took a walk this morning with my umbrella in the rain and saw so many scenes that i would love to paint. I came back later in the car and took a photo of this field ful of Queen Anne's Lace. I decided to try painting in my studio exclusively with a pallete knife. It was fun.

plein air painting

Here's a painting I did a month ago, but have never gotten around to posting. I don't know why, I just haven't. I like the way it came out. I'm so attracted by that hazy blue atmospheric feeling in a painting and when i see that going on in a scene i just have to paint it. I came across this scene while on a walk around the block up from my house ( a very big block, it takes me a full hour of brisk walking to get around it). I knew I had to come back to paint it on another day when the lighting was the same. Luckily, there was a lady washing her car in the driveway just up from here and i was able to get permission to come and set up my easel any time I wanted. A week later, I did just that. I must say, I think I captured what I saw there that morning.

My son-in-law, Evan, encourged me to post regularly, and so I think I will. Thanks Evan.

First plein air painting of 09 and S. Carolina

At last, a beautiful day and no dr. appts to go to with my mom or, daughter Corrie, who is 9 months pregnant . It took me awhile to find everything I needed, some of my outdoor painting stuff was still in boxes in the garage. When I finally got it together I headed out down the road. I wanted to do a quick, simple one to start out with, and knew of this spot from my walks. The blue hills in the background and the metal roof shimmering in the bright sun are what attracted me.
The owner of the land drove up to me in his pick up as I was opening my trunk to get my painting gear . He had an unhappy look on his face, seeing me on the side of the road with my trunk open. I went up to him to introduce myself and as soon as I told him I was an artist, he grinned and slapped me on the shoulder and said "Go ahead, go ahead, you're just takin' pitchers. I thought you were dumping trash!" I then asked if it would be alright if i set up my easel and painted awhile. "Of course!"was his response. I love how friendly these people are around here. So sweet.
I brought two tripods with me, and neither of them worked right. I had to load everything back in the car and run home to try to find the tripod I always use, that was still packed in an undetermined box in the garage. Dave helped lift heavy boxes off the ones I needed to look in and there it was. I threw one of the tripods in the trash as I walked to the car. I drove back to my back to my spot to try it again. It's a small canvas board, just 6x8 inches and the scene was simple, so it didn't take much time. As I was finishing up, Corrie called to invite me to go to Chick-Fil-A with her, Brecken ( my 4 year old grandson) and my mom. It sounded so good, I was really hungry, so I tossed everything in the car and was home in time to go with them. A good day, I would say.
